Godzilla 2014 – Monster Movie Done Right

So, it took a while, but finally got to go see the new Godzilla movie. If you’d grown up with the old Japanese monster movies, this is one to appreciate. They did it right. It was very reminiscent of the way the old movies ran. Know-it-all military ignoring the science guy. Doing things stupidly and making them worse. The humans wholly unimpressive save for the science guys. And wow, Godzilla. The monsters were gorgeous. Especially Godzilla. Can’t wait to get the blue-ray when it comes out. And I definitely need to find his roar for a ring tone. Because that would just make me giggle.

I too really enjoyed the movie. One thing that did bother me was the ships sailing in formation with Godzilla (and darn close too). Just the thought that you are alongside a living unpredictable animal that could twitch and send your ship to the bottom makes it a pretty bonehead move. Assuming that Godzilla has a one track mind and knows you are just along for the ride is something no military personnel would do.

It’s always fun to watch scaly, skyscraper-size behemoths lay waste to civilization, but a bit more human drama wouldn’t have gone amiss.

True, but it seems movies have trouble with a good human story and good monster story in the same movie. And if it is Godzilla, I would rather at least the monster side done right.
